Therapy name: Transcendental Meditation
Regulatory Body:
Efficacy: Personal development, relaxation, stress, relationships, students
Overview: A meditation technique practised twice a day for twenty minutes where you sit with your eyes closed. This technique does not involve contemplation or concentration.
How it works: The mind and body settle down to experience a unique state of restful alertness. As the mind settles, the body becomes deeply relaxed. This allows the mind to transcend all mental activity to experience the simplest form of awareness, Transcendental Consciousness.
What to expect: The instructor will select a sound or mantra that has no meaning assigned to it to be used as a thought in the meditation process. This allows your attention to be diverted to a lower level of mental activity. As the mind quietens down the thought is transcended.
Known Contraindications: Meditation should be used with caution when there are concerns regarding reality testing, ego boundaries, lack of empathy or over-control. It should be used with care when treating some personality disorders.
