Therapy name: Colonic Hydrotherapy
Regulatory Body: Currently seeking regulation within the General Naturopathic Council
Efficacy: Bowel movements
Overview: In colonic hydrotherapy filtered water is flushed through the colon to cleanse it of poisons, gas, accumulated fecal matter and mucus deposits.
How it works: Food waste enters the colon from the small intestines. Water, minerals and vitamins are then reabsorbed and waste materials and toxins are eliminated through the rectum. The colon is approximately five feet long, if it is not functioning correctly many disorders may result.
What to expect: During this treatment you would usually be given a special gown to wear to maintain your modesty. Specialised sterilised equipment is used to slowly introduce filtered water into the rectum. Water is allowed to flow in and then release, expelling toxins and impactions.
Known Contraindications: Diverticulitis, ulcerative colitis, severe haemorrhoids, tumour in the rectum or large intestine, Crohn’s disease (in the acute inflammatory stages)
